Zhigaawin Hiking Trail

map

With the cooperation and assistance from the City of Hastings and the Department of Public Works, hiking trails have been built on City property off Hammond Road just north of State Road. These trails were constructed by Adam Sheldon along with the help of his family, friends and scouts, as an Eagle Scout Project for the Boy Scouts of America. The trails offer the opportunity for various outdoor recreational sports including hiking, biking, orienteering (cross country compass work), snowshoeing, cross country skiing and mountain biking. The family-oriented trails have been named Zhigaawin which is a twist of scouting terms translated into Mohawk Indian words that mean "a good deed". And, according to Adam Sheldon, "As a scout, we must do a good deed daily."

The help on the project was indeed needed and Adam would like to thank the following companies and organizations that gave toward this project: Barry County Lumber, Consumers Concrete, Consumers Power, North Country Trail Association, Cub Scout Pack 3175 and Boy Scout Troop 175 of Hastings.
